ISIL natural outgrowth of Washington: Chomsky

Political commentator and activist Noam Chomsky

Political commentator and activist Noam Chomsky says ISIL and “radical jihadism” are the United States’ own creation.

Chomsky made the remarks during an interview with Truthout news organization, originally published on October 1.

“The appearance of ISIS and the general spread of radical jihadism is a fairly natural outgrowth of Washington wielding its sledgehammer at the fragile society of Iraq,” said Chomsky.

“The situation is a disaster for the US, but is a natural result of its invasion. One of the grim consequences of US-UK aggression was to inflame sectarian conflicts that are now tearing Iraq to shreds, and have spread over the whole region, with awful consequences,” he added.

Chomsky also referred to the US-led attacks on ISIL in Syria, which are being carried out without the approval and collaboration of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, saying the strikes are “undoubtedly, in violation of the UN Charter, the foundation of modern international law.”

He also said that ISIL “apparently continues to draw financial support from wealthy donors in Saudi Arabia and the Emirates,” noting that ISIL’s Takfiri ideological roots were in Saudi extremism.

He called Saudi Arabia “the most radical” state in the world, saying that it “uses its vast oil resources to promulgate its extremist Wahabi/Salafi doctrines by establishing schools, mosques, and in other ways,” and has also been the primary source for the funding of Takfiri terrorist groups.

Chomsky also went on to agree with author and former CIA officer Graham Fuller’s recent statements, referring to the US as one of the terrorist group’s “key creators” resulting from its 2003 war against Iraq.

In an interview with Press TV on September 20, US journalist and activist Don DeBar also said that the ISIL terrorist group is a construct of the CIA and is serving Washington’s interests.

“In my opinion, the ISIS (ISIL) is a construct of the CIA - look how they serve the aims of the United Sates; every time, they chop off a head they have another vote in Congress and more money tossed over,” DeBar said.

The US-led bombing campaign against ISIL began on August 8 in Iraq, and since late September, the US and its Arab allies have been conducting airstrikes against ISIL positions inside Syria as well without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.

Iraq has faced brutal violence by the ISIL Takfiri terrorist group across the country’s north and west since early June. The ISIL terrorists have threatened all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians and Izadi Kurds, during their advances in Iraq.

Syria has also been gripped by deadly violence since 2011. The Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey - are reportedly supporting the militants operating in Syria.

Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, logician, political commentator and activist. He is also a major figure in analytic philosophy and has authored over 100 books.
